Skills and Competencies

• Strong knowledge of debt capital markets, and sustainable and transition finance 

• Demonstrated analytical capabilities in sustainable finance, credit analysis or capital market transactions, with experience evaluating financing frameworks and corporate transition strategies an advantage

• Strong understanding of Japan’s corporate and financial landscape, including issuers, financial institutions, investors, intermediaries, industry associations, and relevant market developments

• Proven ability to form strong analytical judgements, build trusted relationships, communicate technical concepts clearly, and engage credibly with senior internal and external stakeholders

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Japanese and English, with the ability to produce clear analytical conclusions and deliver effective presentations in both languages

• Strong project-management and organizational skills, with the ability to lead multiple complex assignments while maintaining analytical quality, responsiveness, and attention to detail

• Collaborative and inclusive working style, with the ability to mentor colleagues, coordinate shared deliverables, and contribute independently to team initiatives

• Comfort using technology and AI-enabled tools to support analytical workflows and operational efficiency, with a commitment to responsible and ethical AI use

Education 

• Bachelor’s degree required in finance, economics, environmental science, engineering, sustainable development, public policy, international relations, or another relevant discipline

 Responsibilities

Lead sustainable finance assessments and strengthen Moody’s Ratings’ analytical franchise and market presence in Japan.

• Lead sustainable finance assessment mandates in Japan, including Second Party Opinions and Net Zero Assessments, from initial engagement through publication

• Ensure analytical assignments are delivered to high standards of quality, accuracy, responsiveness, and timeliness while coordinating effectively with global and regional colleagues

• Develop Moody’s Ratings’ sustainable finance franchise in Japan by identifying market needs, strengthening the firm’s analytical presence, and contributing insights that inform research, outreach, product evolution, and regional strategy

• Build and maintain relationships with Japanese issuers, financial institutions, intermediaries, investors, industry associations, and other market participants to deepen understanding of Moody’s Ratings’ analytical approach

• Design and deliver market-outreach and education activities, including issuer and intermediary meetings, investor discussions, technical briefings, webinars, conferences, and participation in designated external working groups

• Lead or contribute to thematic research, analytical framework development, market commentary, and thought leadership on sustainable and transition finance developments relevant to Japan

• Mentor junior analysts, review analytical and research work, share technical expertise, and independently lead strategic initiatives that support collaboration, innovation, responsible AI adoption, and operational efficiency

About the Team

The Sustainable Finance Assessments team sits withing Moody’s Ratings’ Sustainable Finance Group, and is responsible for delivering Moody's Ratings business plans in one of its identified growth areas – Sustainable and Transition Finance.

The team provides independent assessments of the credentials of sustainable debt instruments and financing frameworks through Second Party Opinions, as well as assessments of the strength of entities’ carbon transition plans through Net Zero Assessments. The team helps support integrity, transparency, and clarity in an increasingly complex market covering a growing range of sectors and technologies.

By joining the team, you will contribute to the development of sustainable and transition finance in Japan and across Asia Pacific. You will work with analytical colleagues across regions, engage with a broad range of market participants, and help advance research, analytical consistency, market understanding, and embrace AI-enabled ways of working.
