The Role

 

Moody’s Ratings’ Global Banking franchise is an integral part of the Global Financial Institutions (FIG) ratings group, comprising about 90% of annual debt issuance by financial institutions, and roughly two-thirds of FIG revenues and operating income. The Banking group has a well-established presence in all major banking systems globally, and yet still sees franchise growth in various banking regions and in finance companies and securities firms globally, including in private-credit-related issuers. The Global Banking business includes over 100 analysts and staff.

 

This role will lead in a co-management structure with two other Associate Managing Directors in the North American banking team; with the team covering various key sectors including US-based global investment and universal banks, US regional banks, Canadian banks, securities firms, and finance companies. The role will be assigned primary oversight responsibility for one or more of these sectors, with the selected sector(s) being assigned based on the sectoral knowledge and expertise of the selected candidate.

 

This is a highly visible customer-facing role in a dynamic market. The position requires a proven business leader of high integrity, intellect and demonstrated credit judgment to manage the business to the highest professional standards and quality. The incumbent must be a strategic thinker and executor who is a compelling communicator and educator, both internally and externally. Primary responsibilities include:

 

  • Manage a team of seasoned analysts and deliver on FIG’s strategic priorities, such as insightful credit analysis and accurate ratings while managing active deal flows in a timely manner, establishing and maintaining robust and transparent relationships with rated entities and deepening relationships with intermediaries, investors and other market participants.
  • Manage credit analysis of the assigned credit portfolio, including addressing credit issues in a timely and deliberative manner. Continually strengthen the rigor and relevance of our ratings and analysis.
  • Co-manage the analytical staff in North American banking; with analysts based in New York and Toronto. The position has responsibility for overseeing around five direct reports, including providing guidance, feedback and direction, and performance management feedback and reporting.
  • Lead initiatives to strengthen rating quality, operational efficiency, and enhance credit research and outreach.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching for best practices for internal and external meetings, as well as professional excellence.
  • Act as an agile change champion to develop and improve operational procedures and oversee implementations plans in line with market developments.
  • Progress Moody’s Ratings’ position as the thought leader in FIG sectors with investors, intermediaries and issuers, and as the preferred ratings and opinion provider. Lead outreach efforts and participate in meetings with relevant market participants. Convey our opinion with transparency and robust analysis.
  • Contribute to Moody’s Ratings’ transformation initiatives and take a leadership role on specified work streams. Drive agility through transparency and alignment across the organisation. Undertake and support ad hoc projects to advance the franchise and support global and regional management priorities.
  • Develop and execute talent plan. Assess current staff and develop and execute on a plan for strengthening and growing the franchise as appropriate. Collaborate with internal stakeholders in attracting, hiring, motivating, developing and retaining talented staff.

Qualifications:

  • Credit Expertise: Senior market participant with exceptionally strong credit skills, and deep relationships in the investor community. Broad credit experience (typically 12+ years) essential, with extensive banking/securities industry expertise highly desirable.
  • Analytical Leadership: The successful candidate will strive for continual improvement in the analytical application of methodologies, approaches and factors used in the rating process. Creative, well thought out ideas will be expected and welcomed.
  • Thought Leader: Has strategic insights into evolving market dynamics and investor needs. Is broadly recognized and respected in the industry.
  • Talent leadership: Has extensive experience as people managermentor, ideally of a team of credit professionals.
  • Relationship Manager: Has a successful track record of strengthening existing issuer, investor and internal relationships and market outreach, and identifying opportunities in new markets. Brings to bear a customer orientation and market-centric perspective. 
  • Leadership and Empowering Communicator: The successful candidate should be capable of conveying complex analytical and strategic issues to audiences of varying skill and knowledge levels, both internally and externally, through spoken and written communication. Existing market credibility is highly desirable. Excellent writing skills are important, and extensive public speaking experience is a plus.
  • Inclusive Mindset: The candidate should display openness towards diverse cultures.

 

For US-based roles only: the anticipated hiring base salary range for this position is $231,400.00 - $335,500.00, depending on factors such as experience, education, level, skills, and location. This range is based on a full-time position. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for incentive compensation.
